BarFly 100 System

The first thing to note about the BarFly 100 System is that it consists of three components: BarFly Fixture w/ 12ft (3.6m) head extension (fig. 1), Mounting Plate (fig. 2) and Ballast (fig. 3).  It was designed in this manner to allow the greatest flexibility when working on film production where the gaffer and DP are constantly being challenged to light unique locations and problem solve at a moment’s notice.

The BarFly 100 is most at home on location and studio sets for television and feature film production, but many in the electronic field production and ENG community have discovered it for a small, two point or three point lighting kit to complement such popular location lighting instruments as the Kino Flo Diva-Lites.

The BarFly series is now available in an all-in-one, dimming version in a four-tube model, BarFly 400D and two-tube model, BarFly 200D.

The BarFly 100 Fixture
          BarFly 100 Fixture
The BarFly 100 Fixture houses the lamp and is comprised of a sturdy alloyed fixture, Gel Frame, removable 90° Honeycomb Louver with built-in Reflector and built-in head extension.

The BarFly 100 is only 2″ deep, 6″ wide and 16″ long and draws only one Amp of power.

BarFly Louvers
BarFly Honeycomb Louvers                Louver and Gel Frame Holder

The BarFly 100 fixture includes a 90° Honeycomb Louver.  The Kino Flo specially designed metal foil Honeycomb Louver controls and focuses the light which narrows the light spread with minimal light loss.  It is also available in 60° and 45°.

Mounting with Edge Mount
          MTP-BFE                BarFly 100 Edge Mount
The BarFly Edge Mount w/ Baby Receiver (MTP-BFE) can be used in conjunction with a grip arm to enhance the fixture’s narrow profile making it easy to hide in the shot.
The BarFly 100 Ballast
BAL-107-G120
All the features of the BarFly 100 fixture would be useless if Kino Flo had not developed its own ballast that could run the fixture head remotely.  Unlike conventional architectural ballasts that need to operate three feet to six feet from the fixture head, Kino Flo ballasts can operate the fixture heads from up to 75 feet (3 x 25ft) extension cables.

The BarFly Ballast is a high output, high frequency electronic ballast that can operate the lamp up to 75 feet between ballast and fixture.  The ballast sends a high output current to the lamp to drive the light as brightly as possible.  Its high frequency electronics prevent any type of flicker as well.  A special heat-sink design and custom electronic engineering ensure stable operation without magnetic hum or cooling fans to interfere with the sound recording on set.

BarFly 100 Ballast detail

The ballast operates the light on/off instantly.  There is also a special Select switch to raise or drop the wattage in the tube for light output and color control.  Keeping the ballast remote from the fixture and lamp makes the controls more accessible to lighting crews who might need to rig the fixtures into set designs or high up in a lighting grid, but switch them easily from a convenient location on the stage floor.

The Kino Flo BarFly 100 ballast accomplishes all this and still out performs tungsten lighting instruments when it comes to energy efficiency.  In other words, the BarFly ballast uses less power to produce the same amount of soft light as incandescents.  The ballast works reliably under most normal conditions, but it’s also trustworthy in more harsh conditions, such as extreme cold. The BarFly ballast is designed to operate at temperatures from 14F to 122F (-10C to +50C).

In extremely cold temperatures, the ballast may not strike the lamp initially because the lamp may need to warm up.  Switch the ballast to Off, wait seven seconds and try again.  If the ballast does not strike after two or three attempts, turn off the ballast, check that the extension and harness connections are secure and re-strike.  Once operating for a few minutes, the lamp should re-strike instantly.

The BarFly 100 Extension Cable
